MY LAND DOWN UNDER

L.BLOCH
2005

What calls me to the mother land,
this rock hard land with soft red sand.
A land with white inviting beaches,
and cooling afternoon sea breezes.

Of blistering hot dry winds that urge
the raging wild bush-fires to surge,
through the giant eucalypt trees,
fuelled by oil from burning leaves.

And spring-time wild flowers roughly sown,
born in dust from seeds wind blown
that drift across the outback plains,
to bloom there after winter rains.

A land of spiders, snakes and flies
and lurking ‘salty’ crocodiles,
clouds of screeching cockatoos
and timid wary kangaroos

What calls me back from where I wander
back to my fragile land down-under.
It’s in the heart, deep in the soul,
that missing half that makes me whole.
