PETER HOLLINGSWORTH
“…he protected child-molesting ministers…”
From K. C., London, U.K: There was a story in out papers about some religious bloke who was a leader of a church, but he protected child-molesting ministers or priests in the past and there was an outcry about him and he was dismissed from his important government job. Can you tell me something about it? I need it for a project I’m working on.*
REPLY: I think you are referring to the former governor-general, Peter Hollingsworth, once an arch-bishop of the Anglican church in Australia.
His removal from office due to public pressure has its benefits.
According to the latest information released to the media, Hollingsworth continues to be paid (for the rest of his life) the extraordinary amount of $1,621 per day, thanks his friend, the prime minister, John Howard.
Who foots the bill? The Australian tax-payer!
Since his dismissal, Hollingsworth has spent $240,898 on a new office base in Melbourne. His expensive tastes were as follows: office rent, electricity: $200,302, office refurbishment: $240,898, a personal assistant’s salary: $110,268, stationery, phone and fax: $61,632, travel, including a self-drive car: $35,575.
Of the 698 days Hollingsworth spent as the governor-general, he used 20 per cent of his time travelling around the world; he visited 10 countries, including Britain, Turkey, France, Egypt and Indonesia. The cost being $281,677.
Nowadays, still funded by the Australian tax-payer, Hollingsworth says he is is engaged with fund-raising to help teenagers from deprived backgrounds, as well as assisting homeless people.
