MT AUGUSTUS

“…largest rock…”

Mt. Augustus, Australia

Is it true that Ayers Rock is the largest rock in Australia?

Sally Fielding, U.K.

*REPLY: Definitely not. Mt. Augustus, over in West Australia, is purportedly our biggest rock. In fact, it is said to be the world’s largest rock. It is around 1750 million years old and is 2,354 ft. in height. By comparison, Ayers Rock is only 318m in height and is 8 km in circumference.
Like the more famous Ayers Rock, it constantly changes colour – red, blue, orange, green and gold. Around its huge bulk can be found old Aboriginal carvings. It also is a haven for wildlife and maritime fossils can be detected by the keen-eyed visitor. The hugely publicised Ayers Rock (Uluru), which is 450 km south-west of Alice Springs, is a monolith (one solid rock ) while Mt. Augustus is a monocline (folds or layers of rock).*
