Tourists
“…The “tour guide” was hopeless…”
I’ve done lots of travelling in various countries, including outback Australia. I have seen tourists with their pants down, believe me! It is a fickle sort of industry, is tourism, and so are those people involved in it. I remember visiting a so-called “sacred Aboriginal site” near Alice Springs one time, about two years ago. The “tour guide” was hopeless. He took us on a bus tour to a gorge or gap where there were Aboriginal paintings on a rocks. He knew nothing. Questions were answered with things like, “I don’t know,” or “Nobody knows that.” I found out later in the library there were big books on the subject. Who’s kidding who?
Most tourists are not really out to learn anything. They are remarkably uncurious. They go wherever they are taken, look at it, perhaps take a photo, then turn on their heel and leave.
